Round Details

Problems delayed the signups and beginning of R5 in general.

SO far, we have had galaxy funds overflow, negative scores, the end of an official round, been hacked, been DoS-attacked (abot 1000 machines out there attacking us), me and my wife had an aniversary, still not gotten paid and Vish has been ill all week...... How the heck was your week? (-: -- Spinner (September 09, 2001)
  • Round 5 is notable as the first round that was pay-to-play. As such, it saw a dramatic cut in planet numbers, from around 200,000 to about 20,000. This number fell even further in subsequent rounds.

Round Summary

Prior to Round 5 one notable event occurred which was to play a huge role in determining the future course of Planetarion politics. The return of Biggdogg to Wolfpack and his decision to rejoin Legion, taking almost all of the original Round 3 Wolfpack split back with him. With this move relations between Legion and Fury were restrengthened and Legion increased its military power for the forthcoming round. Fury also created a recruitment wing for their alliance, named Wrath. The two most prominent alliances from Round 4, Xanadu and NoS, had agreed upon an alliance at the end of the round for Round 5, with CELL, forming what become known as the NoCeX block. Needing to build a block capable of dealing with this Fury and Legion took their former allies Elysium, Wolfpack, BlueTuba and ViruS with them, creating the WTFVE block, despite the efforts of some.

The NoCeX block realised they were outnumbered pre-round and recruited GMT, consisting of G-II, Mi and Tsunami to attempt to level the playing field. Unfortunately at this point NoS were hit by a large section of their memberbase splitting off to form LuX, who were then hostile towards NoS as the round began. Early on the combined member and co-ords lists for NoCeX and GMT were made public by WTFVE on Sandmans. The NoCeX block, despite their recruitment, was still badly outnumbered and outmatched against a reinvigorated Furgion who proved to be the driving force behind the block. Within days of the war beginning it was obvious that WTFVE would prove victorious and huge numbers of NoS and Xanadu members simply stopped playing.

Stagnation set in for the victors. BT, viewing the round as effectively over, disbanded, with a number of its members going on to form Ni! and many joining other alliances within WTFVE. With nothing else to do the block turned on itself. Fury ended its agreements with Elysium and Legion ended its agreements with WPO and NI. Many people were deeply dissatisfied that instead of Fury and Legion fighting each other they chose to turn on their allies for roids. A large block consisting of these alliances and the defeated ones earlier in the round attempted to take on Furgion but were convincingly defeated in the weeks that followed. The remainder of the round largely consisted of Furgion roiding the remaining high ranking planets in these alliances. One amusing incident towards the end of the round involved large numbers of planets, operating under the Revolt umbrella, launching attacks on top Furgion planets, notably on Yeh and Ish. These attacks were covered by Furgion but still landed, resulting in massive losses for the attackers here and here. Questions over which alliance, Fury or Legion, was the strongest in Round 5 remain, with both sides claiming to be the most powerful alliance of the round afterwards. Regardless Legion held both the top 3 planets and the top 3 galaxies as the round concluded.

Round 5 History from Marduk

The oppositions were clear from the beginning: NoCex & GMT vs WTF & VE. On the paper it looked like a setup for a nice round. Pitifully it did not work out that way. Almost all Coordinates of NoCex/GMT were made public, all participating Alliances tagged [NP]. After a few days it became obvious that the war was lost for them, their galaxies dropped in score and size and out of the ranking list, the cooperation between those alliances first crumbled and then was destroyed totally. The war was lost pretty fast. The reasons for this were the member coordinate lists being made public, boredom grew and some ToT members found something was lacking. Fury and Legion tried to revive the suspense by declaring wars. Fury against Elysium, Legion against Ni! and WPO, but i doubt that this was of any use.

Round 5 was a very succesful round for ToT. Because we tagged ToT immediately after NP tagged, we became well known in the universe. Some members feared that this early tagging would get us additional incomings, but their fears amounted to nothing. In fact almost all ToT galaxies were in top 250 at end of round 5, some members achieved Top 100 spots in players rankings. The tot High Command is very proud with that result and our members. We are looking forward to top that in round 6. We have maintained our old alliances and also formed new alliances for that purpose which will be valid in round 6. --[ToT]Marduk
