Most chat on IRC takes place within channels. To join a channel type:
/join #channelname
In any IRC window. If the channel is set +k then the key must be specified in the join commands:
/join #channelname thekey
A channel might also be set +i, or be set +l and have too many clients in the channel. In this case you will need to be invited to the channel before you can join it. Channels of interest may include the Planetarion IRC Channels, the NetGamers IRC Channels, alliance IRC channels as well as channels of anyone you know.
