If a channel has been registered for over two weeks it is possible to have the [[Channel Supporter|channel supporter]]s changed.

To change supporters go to [[hashCservice|#cservice]] and ask for a [[Channel Services Comittee#Members|CSC admin]]. To have a supporter changed you'll need someone to replace them (who'll need to be active on IRC), a good reason and to know your [[Secret Answer|secret answer]]. You don't need a reason to add a supporter to your channel if you're not removing one first, however a channel may only have two supporters.

In order to register a channel you'll need two supporters, both of whom look unique (ie you can't just register 2 extra nicks and use them).

Client To Client Protocol (CTCP) is perhaps a missnoma, as CTCP requests are still sent via the [[IRC Server|IRC server]]. They allow a variety of interaction with other clients beside basic chat functionality, such as:

To tell NickServ to protect your nick use:

When nickserv is on any client using your [[nick]] has two minutes to [[Registering With Channel Services#Login|log in to P]]. If they do not they will be [[Kill|killed]] from the network.

Channel services are generally part of the network services available on a network. Common types of services include nickserv/chanserv/opserv and GNUWorld. The channels services are usually concerned with managing channels, giving ops etc.

On the [[NetGamers]] network, the bot P provides most user services. In order to use P you need to [[Registering With Channel Services|register with channel services]]. Once registered you can make use of various [http://www.netgamers.org/commands.php P commands] and [[Registering A Channel|register channels]].

P is managed by the [[Channel Services Comittee]], csc. They can be found in [[hashCservice|#cservice]] if you have questions or problems with P. Alternativly, the [http://www.netgamers.org/commands.php command list] contains most of what you'll need to know.

Channels can be transfered under a number of circumstances:
*The channel owner requests its transfer.
*The channel owner has been idle for longer than 21 days
*The channel belongs to an alliance or galaxy and the current owner no longer has their support.

===Transfer Requested By Owner===
To transfer ownership of a channel you need to ask in [[hashCservice|#cservice]] for a member of the [[Channel Services Comittee|CSC]]. You will need to have the person you want to transfer the channel to active and to know your [[Secret Answer|secret answer]].

===Idle Channel Transfers===
Once a channel's owner has not logged in to [[Channel Services Bot|P]] for 21 days someone else with access in the channel may request its ownership. If this person has high access (generally is a supporter or close to) then the channel may be transfered immediatly, otherwise the [[Channel Services Comittee|CSC]] may first check if anyone objects.
Once a channel owner reaches 28 days idle it may be taken by someone without channel access, although the CSC will first check if anyone with access wants it.
Once a channel owner has reached 30 days idle the channel's topic is changed to indicate that it will be deleted soon if noone claims it. This is the same status as after 28 days, but with a visible warning.

If you want to claim a channel with an idle owner, ask in [[hashCservice|#cservice]].

===Alliance/Galaxy Channel Transfers===
An alliance or galaxy channel owner must have the support of the relevant body. If they do not then a change may be requested. In the case of well known alliances this is often simple, as the HC are well known. In the case of galaxies or less well known alliances the channel supporter views may be more important. It is therfore important to make sure that channel supporters are also respected within the alliance.

If a user has [[Channel Op|ops]] in a [[channel]] they may invite other users to it. To issue an invite use:
/invite [[nick]] #channel
The user, nick, will then receive a notice along the lines of:
nick has been invited to #channel

Being invited to a channel means that a user may join the channel even if they are [[Channel Bans|banned]], or if the channel has [[IRC Flags|modes]] +i, +k or +l set.

Some clients will automatically join a channel if they're invited to it. This can be handy but if abused can result in unfriendly attention from the [[oper]]s.

To register with channel services go to [http://www.netgamers.org www.netgamers.org] and use the registration link below the login boxes.

To create a nick you first need to choose one to register. If you choose, it is possible to prevent other users using this nick (to do so, you need to enable [[NickServ]]). As such, it should be the nick that you intend to use - otherwise someone else may decide to use the nick you use and kick you off it. A nick is only yours if you register it. Nicks must be between 2 and 15 characters long, and only some characters are valid. Exact details are given during the registration process.

You will also need an e-mail address to register the nick with. NetGamers currently do not accept hotmail addresses due to previous problems with mails not getting through.

Once that's done you have to choose a question/answer. This is used to prove that you're the account owner if you ever need to do anything unusual with the account, such as change the e-mail address it's registered to. Choosing a meaningful answer is '''very''' important. People have lost their accounts due to choosing one they couldn't remember.

Once you've filled in the information on the website an e-mail will be sent to you. This should arrive within two hours, if it doesn't contact someone in [[hashCservice|#cservice]]. When the mail arrives there'll be a link in it to activate your nick. When you click this link another e-mail is sent with your password in. This sometimes generates an error, but this error is a mistake and can happily be ignored.

Once the password e-mail arrives you're ready to log in to your nick. When using P commands, such as the login command, which deal with passwords you have to use P@cservice.netgamers.org as P's nick. This is a security measure and is not neccessary for 'normal' commands. Therefore, to log in to P use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org login ''username'' ''password''
With the username you registered and the password you received in your mail.
Once you're logged in you'll probably want to change your password to something more memorable. To do this use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org newpass ''newpassword''
Once that's done you're ready to use P. If someone gives you [[Channel Access|access to their channel]] you'll be able to use some [[Basic P commands||commands]] depending on the amount of access they give you. Alternativly, you might want to [[Registering A Channel|register your own channel]].

There are many IRC networks, each formed from one or more interlinked servers. Most chat on IRC takes place within [[channel]]s. To join a channel type:

In any IRC window. If the channel is set [[IRC_flags|+k]] then the key must be specified in the join commands:

A channel might also be set [[IRC_flags|+i]], or be set [[IRC Flags|+l]] and have too many clients in the channel. In this case you will need to be [[Invite|invited]] to the channel before you can join it.

Connecting To IRC

There are several ways to connect to IRC. The most common is to use an [[IRC Clients|IRC client]], a stand alone piece of software available for most computer/operating system combinations. In order to use an IRC client you need to download it, install it and connect to the network of your choice. This can present problems in some circumstances, such as when you're at work so can't install software, or if you're behind a firewall that doesn't allow connections on the IRC ports. [[CGIIRC]] clients are web based irc clients which can be run in a standard browser window. If you can't install a normal client it's worth giving them a go.

Once you've got a client the exact procedure to connect to an IRC network is slightly different for each one. Most installable clients will ask you for information/basic settings when you first start them up. After this they may invite you to choose a network to join, or may present you with a basic IRC window, so you can input commands. In most popular IRC clients:
/server irc.server.name
Will connect you to a server. If you're using a CGIIRC instead then you may be prompted to put in a server when you're starting it up, otherwise the above line will probably work as well.

Once you're connected to IRC you'll probably want to login to [[Channel Services|channel services]], set some [[IRC flags|user flags]] and [[Joining Channels|join some channels]].
