IRC flags can affect either users of channels and control much of the operation of an irc network.

User flags
User flags, user modes or umodes are set on a client by client basis. Generally, they control a client's interaction with the nework. To set user modes use:
/mode username mode
for example
/mode mynick +i

Mode

Name

Description

d

Deaf

The client doesn't see channel messages. Personal messages work as normal

i

Invisible

The client doesn't show on /whois unless they share a channel with the client making the request

o

Oper

The client gains oper. Being an oper gives access to things such as kill and gline.

s

Server Notices

Sets the level of server notices that the client receives. Generally only useful for opers.

w

Wallops

Sets whether the client receives wallops

k

Services

If set the client is immune to kicks, kills and pretty much everything thrown at it. This is usually only set on network services.

g

Server Debug

Sets whether the client receives server debug messages. Generally only useful for opers.

x

Hidden Hostmase

Changes the client's hostmask to registerednick.users.netgamers.org. Requires that the client is logged in to channel services.

As quite a few user modes are only useful to opers those of importance to standard users are denoted in bold. Most users set mode +ix upon joining the network.

Channel Flags
Channel flags, channel modes or cmodes control how a channel operates. Some of them may affect specific users on a channel. To set channel modes use:
/mode #channelname modestring
for example
/mode #mychannel +k

Mode

Name

Usage

Description

b

Ban

+b Hostmask

Means that noone matching that hostmask can join the channel. Anyone matching that hostmask already in the channel is unable to speak unless +o or +v

i

Invite Only

+i

Means that anyone wishing to join the channel must be invited by an op in the channel.

k

Keyed

+k key

Means that anyone wishing to join the channel must specify the key within the join command.

l

Limit

+l integer limit

Means that only limit clients are allowed in the channel.

m

Moderated

+m

Means that only +o and +v clients can speak in the channel.

o

Op

+o nick

Gives ops to nick.

s

Secret

+s

Like +p, but also means that the channel doesn't show up on /list.

To register with channel services go to www.netgamers.org and use the registration link below the login boxes.

Nick Registration
To create a nick you first need to choose one to register. If you choose, it is possible to prevent other users using this nick (to do so, you need to enable NickServ). As such, it should be the nick that you intend to use - otherwise someone else may decide to use the nick you use and kick you off it. A nick is only yours if you register it. Nicks must be between 2 and 15 characters long, and only some characters are valid. Exact details are given during the registration process.

You will also need an e-mail address to register the nick with. NetGamers currently do not accept hotmail addresses due to previous problems with mails not getting through.

Once that's done you have to choose a question/answer. This is used to prove that you're the account owner if you ever need to do anything unusual with the account, such as change the e-mail address it's registered to. Choosing a meaningful answer is very important. People have lost their accounts due to choosing one they couldn't remember.

Once you've filled in the information on the website an e-mail will be sent to you. This should arrive within two hours, if it doesn't contact someone in #cservice. When the mail arrives there'll be a link in it to activate your nick. When you click this link another e-mail is sent with your password in. This sometimes generates an error, but this error is a mistake and can happily be ignored.

Once the password e-mail arrives you're ready to log in to your nick. When using P commands, such as the login command, which deal with passwords you have to use P@cservice.netgamers.org as P's nick. This is a security measure and is not neccessary for 'normal' commands. Therefore, to log in to P use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org login username password
With the username you registered and the password you received in your mail.

Changing Your Password
Once you're logged in you'll probably want to change your password to something more memorable. To do this use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org newpass newpassword
Once that's done you're ready to use P. If someone gives you [[Channel Access|access to their channel] you'll be able to use some P commands depending on the amount of access they give you. Alternativly, you might want to register your own channel.
*The channel owner requests its transfer.
*The channel owner has been idle for longer than 21 days
*The channel belongs to an alliance or galaxy and the current owner no longer has their support.

Transfer Requested By Owner
To transfer ownership of a channel you need to ask in #cservice for a member of the CSC. You will need to have the person you want to transfer the channel to active and to know your secret answer.

Idle Channel Transfers
Once a channel's owner has not logged in to P for 21 days someone else with access in the channel may request its ownership. If this person has high access (generally is a supporter or close to) then the channel may be transfered immediatly, otherwise the CSC may first check if anyone objects.
Once a channel owner reaches 28 days idle it may be taken by someone without channel access, although the CSC will first check if anyone with access wants it.
Once a channel owner has reached 30 days idle the channel's topic is changed to indicate that it will be deleted soon if noone claims it. This is the same status as after 28 days, but with a visible warning.

If you want to claim a channel with an idle owner, ask in #cservice.

Alliance/Galaxy Channel Transfers
An alliance or galaxy channel owner must have the support of the relevant body. If they do not then a change may be requested. In the case of well known alliances this is often simple, as the HC are well known. In the case of galaxies or less well known alliances the channel supporter views may be more important. It is therfore important to make sure that channel supporters are also respected within the alliance.

Mist: added to irc pending catagory due to broken links

To register with channel services go to www.netgamers.org and use the registration link below the login boxes.

Once you're logged in you'll probably want to change your password to something more memorable. To do this use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org newpass newpassword
Once that's done you're ready to use P. If someone gives you access to their channel you'll be able to use some commands depending on the amount of access they give you. A user may only edit another user's access if they have more access than them, ie a level 400 user may not remove a level 401 user. A user may also not suspend a user who has equal or greater access than themselves. However, a user may perform most commands, such as kick or ban, on users with higher access. For this reason it is important to only give access to users you trust not to abuse it.
To be a channel owner you must either be given a channel by its owner, take an idle channel or register a channel.

Mist: typo

Means that only limit clients are allowed in the channel.

m

Moderated

+m

Means that only +o and +v clients can speak in the channel.

n

No External Messages

+n

Means that only clients in the channel can speak in it.

To register with channel services go to www.netgamers.org and use the registration link below the login boxes.

Once you're logged in you'll probably want to change your password to something more memorable. To do this use:
/msg p@cservice.netgamers.org newpass newpassword
Once that's done you're ready to use P.

Means that only limit clients are allowed in the channel.

m

Moderated

+m

Means that only +o and +v clients can speak in the channel.

n

No External Messages

+n

Means that only clients in the channel can speak in it.

o

Op

+o nick

Gives ops to nick.

p

Private

+p

Means that the channel does not show up on a user's whois.

s

Secret

+s

Like +p, but also means that the channel doesn't show up on /list.

Mist: added setting user flags to list of things to do

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) can refer to both a set of protocols as discussed in rfc1459 or to the chat medium they regulate. There are many IRC networks, each formed from one or more interlinked servers. Generally, to conncect to an IRC server, an IRC Client is used such as mirc, xchat, ircle or others. Alternativly, the Planetarion Com Unit or another CGIIRC will do the job.

Uses
Many alliances use IRC as a primary means of communication. If you want to join an alliance irc activity is often required. It's also a good way to meet people from Planetarion in general. Planetarion is a very community oriented game so if you don't IRC at least a little you miss out on a large part of it.

NetGamers
Planetarion's main channel, #Planetarion, can be found on the NetGamers IRC network, at irc.netgamers.org.
The NetGamers Website contains more information about the network.
Connecting To IRC is simple, and well worth it if you intend to get the maximum fun out of Planetarion

IRCing
To use NetGamers there are a few important things to know:

Mist: grammar

There are several ways to connect to IRC. The most common is to use an IRC client, a stand alone piece of software available for most computer/operating system combinations. In order to use an IRC client you need to download it, install it and connect to the network of your choice. This can present problems in some circumstances, such as when you're at work so can't install software, or if you're behind a firewall that doesn't allow connections on the IRC ports. CGIIRC clients are web based irc clients which can be run in a standard browser window. If you can't install a normal client it's worth giving them a go.

Once you've got a client the exact procedure to connect to an IRC network is slightly different for each one. Most installable clients will ask you for information/basic settings when you first start them up. After this they may invite you to choose a network to join, or may present you with a basic IRC window, so you can input commands. In most popular IRC clients:
/server irc.server.name
Will connect you to a server. If you're using a CGIIRC instead then you may be prompted to put in a server when you're starting it up, otherwise the above line will probably work as well.

Once you're connected to IRC you'll probably want to login to channel services, set some user flags and join some channels.
