=== A Relaxing Browser Game For The Whole Family ===

In [[Planetarion]] you compete with thousands of other players over a 2 month period of non-stop gaming. Activity, skill, endurance and a solid [[alliance]] are the building blocks of a winner in this game. Use of [[IRC]], while not required to play the game, is extremely important to communicate between other players and to succeed in the game.

At the beginning you construct [[structures]] and initiate [[asteroids]]. You will gain resources by mining these asteroids. With these [[resource|resources]] you are able to construct 6 different [[Ship_Class|classes of ship]]. Two classes are capable of [[Pods|stealing asteroids]] from enemy planets while another is capable of bombarding enemy planets ruthlessly destroying their [[structure]]s.
There are 5 [[race]]s to choose from, and each is equipped with unique ships.

Planets are ranked by their [[score]]. The planet with the highest score wins the game.

Each planet (including your own!) is grouped into [[galaxy|galaxies]]. Planetarion is a turn-based game with turns being called a [[tick]]. In standard rounds, there is one hour between ticks.

Rounds are generally announced 2-3 weeks before the ticks (turns) start. Around a week before a round starts, signups are opened allowing everyone to register their very own planet. When the game starts, everyone is placed in [[Protection|protection mode]] and temporarily grouped into large galaxies. At tick 12, planets are "[[shuffle|shuffled]]" and placed into their true starting galaxy using a highly intelligent AI. You can form [[buddy pack]]s with friends, which can contain up to 3 people, which will allow you to play in the same galaxy throughout the round.

=== The First 72 Hours: Under Protection ===

During the first 72 [[tick]]s of the game your planet is under [[protection]]. During this time, get used to the game, and as often as possible visit the mining page to initiate asteroids, the research page to start new researches and the construction page to start new constructions.

It is recommended to have some ships built by [[tick]] 82, as that is when the first attacks will be able to reach your planet. In the beginning of the game it is nearly impossible to stop attacks on your planet. As such, it is preferable to build mainly [[Pods#Astropod|pods]] and send them out to attack others.

== Alliance: 1st line of support ==

Beside galaxies, your main line of defence is [[alliance|alliances]]. Alliances are groups of players that agree to defend and perform coordinated attacks together.

=== How Do I Get An Alliance? ===

Most alliances require [[IRC|IRC]] activity. The established alliances require vouches (people already in the alliance knowing you and saying you're a good player), but many just interview and require a minimum activity time. === Inititative ===

[[Initiative]] defines the order that ships fire in battle. Generally, [[Race|Cathaar]] EMP ships fire first, then [[Race|Xandathrii]] ships, then [[Race|Terran]] and [[Race|Zikonian]] kill ships and [[Race|Cathaar]] kill ships, and then the astropods, and then steal ships, and then structure killers.

=== Arm/Cost and Dam/Cost explained ===

In the [http://game.planetarion.com/stats.pl?page=33 ship statistics] these are, in some ways, more important than the armour, damage and cost columns themselves. They summarize these columns by saying, per cost, how much armour or damage the ship does. This means you can quickly compare ships no matter their different costs. looking at Terran, you can see their "Arm/Cost" column is much bigger than the other races. [[Race|Cathaar]] and [[Race|Xandathrii]] have bigger "Dam/Cost" columns, but keep in mind that 6 of the [[Race|Cathaar]] ships only stun their opponents (the ships that are listed as EMP).

==== Attacking ====

Look around for targets you can handle, unit scan, produce a [[battle calculation]] and attack. Remember to send enough [[pods]] to capture 25% of the targets [[asteroid|roid]]s, which have an armour of 50. Get a News scan at [[ETA]] 1 or a Jump Gate Probe scan between [[ETA]]1-4 to be aware of any defence the planet might have obtained. It is advisable to watch your targets resource spending during the attack not to be caught unaware of ships coming out of production. The [http://pirate.planetarion.com/showthread.php?t=185199 How to Attack] thread on the [Strategy] Forum outlines a procedure for attacking, however it does include some more advanced [[:Category:Terminology|Terminology]] so it may be initially confusing, however it is still a good viable guide. Furthermore, a description of the various [[Fleet Strategy]] is also available - it outlines common names for the various tactics involved, provides an example, and identifies counter-strategy too. Again, it uses complex [[:Category:Terminology|Terminology]] and so it is something to work towards :).

== Description ==
The <strong>General Discussions</strong> forum is the part of the [[Forums|Planetarion Forums]] where all off-topic discussions not covered by any of the other forums go. While originally Planetarion was one of the main topics on this forum, the later creation of other subforums, most notably [[Planetarion Discussions]], have led to this forum being a more social place than one to discuss the actual game itself. Many of the current regular posters on this forum no longer even play the game, but remain at the forums to keep in touch and discuss a variety of generic topics.

The low influx of new players and forum posters have led to the creation of a more or less secluded community on the General Discussions forum, that may seem somewhat unfriendly and inaccessible to any newcomers. Although certainly a large amount of in-jokes are common on the forum, there is no actual hostility to anyone who has something worthwhile to say. Many of the newer posters on the forums have not let the first sight scare them off, and now continue to add something more or less worthwhile to the forums. A number of regulars can be found in the unofficial [[channel]] [[hashforums|#forums]] on [[NetGamers]].

The forum is currently moderated by [[Marilyn Manson]] and [[Dead_Meat]], with forum admins [[JammyJim]] and [[JonnyBGood]] both keeping close watch on this forum as well.

==Round 7==

[[VisioN]] was founded in Round 7 - tho it first real, complete standalone round was round 8.

There was at first no intention to make it an alliance. We just wanted to make some [[Battlegroup]] in the Newx Block and a lump sum out of an alliance called [[TPS]].

It started out with 2 [[galaxies]] and after more friends wanted to join in and some interesting people without an alliance got mixed into our galaxies we found out ourself with 75 people in 5 [[galaxies]].

We had an old server in Havens kitchen who gave us privacy to organize our attacks etc. (To often i had to call/sms [[Haven]] in the night to reboot the server.....)

With the progress of the round in which the Block [[Newx]] got owned [[VisioN]] stood active and fought their way through the round. Of course we also lost players but the core was active and due the overhelming inactivity in [[Newx]] we broke from them and went on our own. We started to recruit active players out of our cluster alliances and friends who were also fed up.

We started to support [[FAnG]] with attacks on [[Fury]] & [[ViruS]]. [[FAnG]] offered us to become a wing of them but in the very last second we refused that and became our very own alliance.

The first HC´s were as founder : [[Legator]]

and as cofounders : Seekshot, [[Haven]], [[Altor]].

==Round 8==

In round 8 we cooperated with [[Ministry]] and [[Lost]] (which wasnt really a win) and in this round we had our first top 100 planet and a quite good averagescore (around 13 to 14 millions) which was a quite good one compared to the other alliances. We stayed mainly neutral but supported now and then [[Titans]] or also [[Fury]] in hitting one of them (just on a small basis, we got that way the coordinates of them)

Was one of our best rounds (imo) and was a good start for the future.

In this round [[^Wannabe^]] and Androx joined the command teams and Seekshot got dropped

==Round 9==

After the long break we wanted to stay “solo” again but private [[galaxies]] made that impossible. The first idea was to join [[galaxies]] with mates without looking on their alliances and just to play neutral. I was in a [[galaxy]] with some old mates and that again was part of some cooperation. It consisted of the by that time [[SWEET]]-[[alliances]]. That and the fact that many other [[galaxies]] were also shared with other [[alliances]] ([[SWEET]]+others) made us decide to not join those [[galaxies]] because it was very visible at an early stage that there was some [[block]]s being created. By that time we started to cooperate with [[Rock]], [[Templar]] and [[TFD]]. But at the same time were were in talks with the [[VOM]]-[[Block]]. We joined, as most know, the [[VOM]]-[[Block]] only because of the fact that the opposition had much bigger numbers. (Yea – we are great holy people).

As most know the result was that [[VVOMM]] ([[VisioN]], [[ViruS]], [[Olympians]], [[Ministry]], [[Madcows]]) were bashed heavily. We were outnumbered by [[WEETNAHR]] and whoever by 3,5 to one and we weren't able to fight back. But like in [[Round 7]] we stayed active and fought back and never gave up. I must say with some more spirit of the other [[allies]] we could have achieved more.

Sadly after joining the [[VOM]]-[[Block]], we lost [[Haven]] as a [[HC]] (she joined [[Rock]]) and a few members. Another nail in the coffin was surely the small universe (3.500 planets) and the outcome was a lack of targets. But as always – We didn’t give up.

In this round Skycrane was so gracious and supported us with a 2nd server which was first class. If one went off line the other one was up. Never had really problems (only at one time both servers went down.)

==Round 10==

In [[round 10]], the round of the “new PA” we started completely solo – random [[Galaxies]] made that possible. Attacked in the first 2 weeks where we wanted and whom we wanted. But there were other [[Block]]s. The [[EET]] [[block]] ([[Elysium]], [[Eclipse]] and [[ToT]] and friends) and on the other side [[FAnG]] and [[Dragons]]. Due to a result of an even smaller universe again (1900 planets in the beginning) there was a fat lack of planets again – result was we had heavy incomings from both sides. So we napped [[FAnG]] and [[Dragons]]. The outcome was a nice and interesting fight with the opposite side until the big “happenings” happened. Later on we had some nice big battles with [[NoS]]/[[hirr]] who themselves joined the [[EET]] side. Both parties made a full war and we gave each other heavy incomings. The best night was were we launched on 56 [[NoS]]/[[hirr]] planets at the same time – that is one of the nights I won't ever forget in [[Planetarion]]. Great work from our [[BC]]´s ([[Desse]] and Rember).

We finished with 7 top 100 planets and had at one time 3 top 10 planets (One got roided, one suicided his ships by fault and another just got outgrown later on – due to strange “tactics”) It was again a very incoming-intensive round but we almost managed to stopped all reported incomings. Even if they came with 8 fat waves like on our top planets.

I will tell only about start of the round.

At start i want to say few words about [[Eclipse]], before round started i knew they have outstanding power and I forecast they win the round. As they got a lot of members from alliances that had fallen apart in [[Round 8]] like [[Adelante]], [[Fury]], [[FAng]], [[Titans]], ie lots of best players from other alliances.
Now about main thingie at start.. ppls saing that it was [[VVOMM]] (5 alliances) at war with WEETNAHR (9 alliances - 4 in [[WEET]] among them [[Eclipse]] and 5 in [[NAHR]] - A is [[Auld]] - itself 2 alliances), but actually it wasn't that way, it was way simpler VVOMM against the rest of the Universe. Let's see at start there no wars until tick 72, [[parallel]] alliances being formed, every galaxy in para geting accepted, as WEETNAHR have way more members, they control para, geting intelligence, figuring out VVOMM galaxies coords(very easy, as it's mainly only VVOMM and WEETNAHR galaxies). Soon enought after protection over, they start kicking VVOMM galaxies from para alliance (starting from weakest ones) and all para start bashing them(all not VVOMM, i.e. Universe) as they only targets allowed to be attacked in para, and we all know all attacks at first in para. We tried to defend as we could, but odds wasn't on ours side, one thing fight again 9 alliances, another - with rest of Universe, unable to get roids, as they get defence in para, others (not VVOMM/WEETNAHR) wasn't mind kicking others VVOMM (even top para galaxies) from para alliances, i think they just was gutless, really i can't blame them, poor puppets. :P
Well, the rest is very simple standing against galaxy is impossible. What happened after in round? - I have no idea.

=== Round9 History ===

Planetarion didnt die. A firm called [[Jolt]] bought PA and the old creators continued their work as employees of jolt.
Short summary of the political situation - blocks:

[[VVOMM]] - Vision, ViruS, Olympians(old Titans, LDK core), Madcows, Ministry

[[NaR]] - NoS, Auld(hirr), RaH

[[WEET]] - WP, Elysium, Eclipse(Fury follower), ToT

NaR and WEET agreed to nap with eachother to get revenge on the LDK/Titans guys in Olympians and as revenge for WebAngels behaviour during the politic period of R9.

It was a 3 week take out and VVOMM was dead.

ToT itsself got a new international wing.
Called LCH, it is the old leech alliance and played several rounds as BG for different allys. Together with LCH we played as one alliance and became finally a real topalliance with also an high membercount and able to fight each other topalliances in the game.

After the VVOMM take out, NaR and WEET dropped their nap again and a new 2 week take out of NaR happend.
After 5 weeks, WEET had controll over the whole universe and a longer stagnation was the result.
Finally the targetsituation became so bad that WEET decided to splitt. ToT went with their old friends and allieds from Eclipse and Elysium went with WoflPack. So at least the last war of this round was a fair one (2 vs. 2).
A 3 week hard conducted war followed till Ecl/ToT won the predominance. Last 2 weeks of R9 were dominated by stagnation again. Altogether it was the most successfull round of ToT in our PA history. All top10 gals had ToT AND Ecl members in. ToT had 40 top100 planets. top100 of ToT were all in top250 of the planetranking. Our allieds Eclipse had a similar successfull result.
I think the result speaks for itself.

'''NewDawn''' has played every round of Planetarion and has often been represented in top blocks and alliance rankings. It was founded in round 1 by [[Sith]], [[Stew]] and [[Stez]]. New Dawn's philosophy is "fun first" and they play the game with that idea first and foremost in their sights. This has contributed to a strong and active community.

NewDawn is one of the oldest of all the alliances, dating from [[Round 1]]. Many members from the very early days of NewDawn still remain.

In recent rounds, NewDawn has made new friends and stepped up a bit, finishing third in [[Round 12]], allied to the winners [[1up]]. After relatively poor showing in the first half of [[Round 13]], NewDawn livened things up again for its members (and perhaps for the game) by merging with [[SiN]] to form [[SiNND]].

Between [[Round 13]] and [[Round 14]] NewDawn suffered a bit of a crisis. [[G-II]] decided to de-merge from NewDawn (they had merged in a much earlier round), and several other members including one HC decided to join [[1up]]. For a while it looked to some like NewDawn would cease to function as an alliance, and most of the universe had written off their round 14 chances. However, the core membership made a very good start to the round, not least due to sterling work from the [[HC]] [[Gate]], [[The_Fish]], [[User:Flying_So-Low|Flying_So-Low]] and [[Spritfire]]; and after a series of other alliances disbanding or collapsing against the winners 1up, NewDawn ended up finishing 2nd. During the round they took in a lot of new members, mainly from the alliances of [[Wolfpack]] and [[Insomnia]], as well as [[SiN]] members formerly playing with [[Hydra]]; increasing membership from about 40 to over 80 members.

NewDawn went into [[Round 15]] with yet another HC change, with [[Grog]], [[h3ll]], and [[Amon]] joining [[Flying_So-Low]] as HC after the departures of [[Gate]], [[The_Fish]] and [[Spritfire]] from the HC team. They played [[Round 15]] well on a political base with [[Grog]] being the political genious and managed to stay #1 for a long time. Nearing the end they attacked Exilition full force because it was only a matter of time untill Exilition would attack them, but Exilition proved - with the help of other alliances such as Subh and VGN - a too big of an adversary for NewDawn. Exilition took over the #1 position making NewDawn end 2nd.

After [[Round 15]] [[Amon]], [[Grog]], [[h3ll]] and [[Flying_So-Low]] resigned as HC and took a well deserved break after their outstanding performances in [[Round 15]]. During the time inbetween rounds a new command was set up once again. <br>
In [[Round 16]] the council constisted out of:<br>

* [[Paddy]] leading the Battle Commander Department
* [[JDD]] leading the Defence Commander Department

With this new command NewDawn reinforced the community feeling on which the founders of NewDawn have built the community that exists now. They are still going for victory but will not when the costs are getting members to quit due to getting burnt out. Victory at all costs is not a motto for NewDawn. The strong feeling of community, having fun, socialising, etc. is what has kept NewDawn going for so many rounds, sacrefising this for victory is not an option.

NewDawn started [[Round 21]] with only two HC, namely [[Barrow]] and [[cura]]. After losing quite a few members to Conspiracy and WolfPack, NewDawn isn't planning to fill up the ranks to 70 to be able to compete for the #1 position. Instead they are recruiting members they feel can become core members of the alliance.

'''Concordium''' was a major [[alliance]] in [[Round 1]] and most of [[Round 2]]. It was the first large and successful alliance, and is generally considered to have won [[Round 1]], despite not achieving the level of dominance over the Top 100 lists that alliances in later rounds would.

== History ==
In [[Round 2]] the alliance overexpanded, and combined with what some members at the time believed to be an overly conservative targetting strategy, this led to internal difficulties, culminating in the breaking off of their most important wing, [[Legion]], which together with new-found [[ally]] [[Fury]] went on to win the round. Concordium disbanded shortly after the split.
