This round abruptly ended early in December 2002 (8th December?? - check) without warning when the leased servers were reposessed due to Fifth Season not raising enough money to pay for them. Credit card fraud in this and previous rounds was widely blamed as much of the money raised through account subscriptions was paid as chargeback fines for fraudulant transactions. Lithuanian and Romanian players had born the brunt of the blame for this.

During the round both Spinner and fudge left their roles, although fudge maintained the round when there were server problems requiring direct intervention.

Fudge looked at the code, but determined that it would not be worthwhile to rewrite the necessary parts in order to complete the 2 weeks remaining in the round. Zeus made several emotional announcements on the portal and in #planetarion where he gave out as much information about what had happened as possible, however this was limited.

After an outcry from the community Zeus persueded Fifth Season to sell the Planetarion name and code. During December there was little information about the bidding process although several Planetarion names such as Starbucks placed bids. The winner was eventually Jolt who paid an undisclosed sum.

Snippets
The history of Round8 is written down quickly
ToT decided to continue the cooperation with FAnG. Together with Adelante we planned to make a triade for R8.
Fury claimed to go solo and Titans/LDK/Virus we had seen as main enemy for R8. They had both a lot good players in and a row of good partners what had made them to a great enemy.

Additionally I should remember that R8 was the first round since R3 which only allowed random gals and R8 was planned to become the last one in PA history.

ToT also opened an international wing in R8 which was leaded by bartgymnast. But it always was pretty small wing.
We had a really nice roundstart and all worked fine till Adelante became intern problems. Through the great power of Titans/LDK/Virus, our triade and Fury decided to cooperate for destroying them. Already 3 weeks after roundstart, Adelante disbanded and their several wings joined other allys. The Adelante Core BG joined Fury and so the new Triade became FAnG/Fury/ToT. But as longer the war went, more and more FAnG planets become closed for cheating and this became to a big intern problem for FAnG, moral went down, battles were lost. Some final trys to beat LDK/Titans in big battles failed too. At the end FAnG splitted, Rumad and hinch took controll over FAnG and kicked to old HCs. At the end (and after a lot of argues) ToT and FAnG canceled all agreements, so only Fury and ToT were left and fighting virus/titans/ldk.

And to be honest, we failed. through a lot lost battles and the disband from 2 of our allieds, we werent able to fight back.
At least we were able to protect our topplayers till the end.
Even the round ended much earlier than expected. Planetarion was bankrupt and servers went down.
So the round ended 3weeks before the originally planned date.
It seemed that PA was finally over....

PATeam are volunteers who slave for Jolt to keep the community alive. They are also invariably and often unjustly wrong in the communities eyes about anything PA related. The team was created in Round 4 (please verify) to replace PACrew.

Originally PATeam was lead by Zeus until the takeover by Jolt (between Round 8 when Planetarion went bust and Round 9) after which Spinner took over, followed by MrBrick until approximatley the end of Round 10 and A2 from then until between Round 12 and Round 13 Many people have been part of PATeam over the years including:

A2,
Appocomaster,
Aryn,
Ashknight,
Azrael,
Biffy (Jolt),
Blixxard,
Fudge (Creator),
Harshak,
Ice-Lady,
Jakey,
JammyJim,
JonnyBGood,
KaneEd,
Karmulian,
Kal,
Keef (Jolt),
Kloopy,
Konsul,
Legolas,
Lunar Lamp,
Mist,
Mit,
Mong,
MrBrick,
Mushroom,
NB3,
Oreo (Creator),
ph8,
Phil^,
Pishmishy (Jolt),
Prince,
Spinner (Creator),
TheRealMig,
Wakey,
Vish (Creator),
Xontas,
Zeus (Creator),
Zokum,

Structure
This has varied over time and some have accused the team of spending more time on internal politics than the future of the game. Initially Zeus was in charge with other members at least one level below him. Post-takeover the balance of power shifted between Spinner and the newly appointed creators Kloopy and Prince who had both left the team by the end of June 2003 (end of Round 9.5). MrBrick took over and ran the team in a similar style to Zeus until disagreements with the team caused his departure at the end of Round 10 (Christmas 2003). From then on the team was split into departments under Karmulian (public relations), Mit (coding), Phil^ (support), JammyJim (forums) and A2 (IRC and internal team management). At this point biffy was employed by Jolt and became the liason, replacing Keef. Towards the end of Round 12 Kal took over the reins.

Alliance affiliations
Traditionally members of PA Team have been required to leave their alliances prior to joining in order to maintain impartiality. This generally means that members of PA Team do not actively play in the round except from the 1:1 admin galaxy. However every round there have been accusations of PATeam favouring one alliance over another. These accusations are usually from the alliances diametrically opposed to the ones supposedly favoured.

Admin Tools
Different members of PA Team have different levels of access to the admin tools that can be used to control the game. These range from being able to set the Message of the Day, to searching for, and dealing with cheating accounts, to starting and stoping the ticker, and finally being able to configure the entire universe setup. Members of the multihunter team also have access to parts of the tools in order to gather evidence and determine whether or not to close a planet. In order to maintain impartiality no-one with access to admin tools is allowed to play the game except from 1:1.

Length of Service
Time spent in the team varies depending on performance within the role and whether the person gets on with everyone else. At the end of Round 12 the members with the longest service so far are JammyJim, Mushroom and Aryn

NDA
NDA's (Non Disclosure Agreement) were insisted on by Jolt towards the end of Round 10 after various incidents of leaks or team members speaking out of turn on the forums. All new members and multihunters are required to sign one. The issue had been known to bring the team to the brink of destruction. There have been plans at various points to bring the entire support, mod and #planetarion ops under the system, but these have so far been rejected.

Membership
PATeam members have generally been selected by the current members based on who they know can do the job, and since the takeover by Jolt, who is willing to sign the NDA. At various points the team included all of the forums moderators and #planetarion staff. The group that includes the mods, #planetarion ops and the #support staff are more commonly known as the 'reps'.
* New opt in email list for newsletters, round announcements, etc<br>
* You must now give a reason when you leave an alliance and the alliance will be mailed<br>
* Missions page change to remove info column, alt text now appears with the ship name<br>
* Message system rewrite - both planets and alliances can now send messages to planets and alliances. Messaging your entire alliance is now done from the new messages page under Alliances, by PR officers, BCs and HCs. Doing that will message anyone accepted into the alliance, even the recruits<br>
* The Members and Applicants page now lists more data for all members; you can sort by clicking on the headers<br>
* The handling of prepaid credits has been rewritten. It is no longer a script running separately causing load every 15 minutes, it now checks only once per signup, at ACTIVATION. First it tries to find a match by email, then by first name & last name & country. If a match is found, the activation page will display this with big yellow text to the user. The player will also see the "upgrade now" link on Overview<br>
* To reduce size of the DB, planet ranking history is only the last 500 ticks and we only store the history every 10 ticks!!! saves lots of DB space<br>
* Scans are now deleted after 24 hours

I am delighted to be able to let you know a few of the changes we will be seeing in round 13. The changes are varied, but nothing to radical or scary

-Upgraded planets can create, join and leave buddy packs before the shuffle.

-The galaxy-system will now no longer create more galaxies, but keep filling up those we have
.
-The PA Mail system has been rewritten - both planets and alliances can now send messages to planets and alliances. When alliances send messages, no coords or planet-names are revealed, only the name of the alliance.

-The old members page has now been split up into 2 pages, Members and Applicants.

-The process of accepting / rejecting new members has been redesigned for better communication etc.

-The Members page now lists more data for all members, and the members can be sorted

-Pre-paid credits are added when a planet is activated rather than with regular script running.

-Scans are now deleted after 24 hours

-Various Code Optimisations

More information will come in the next few weeks
</td></tr>
Galaxy solution for round 13
<table>
<tr><td bgcolor="lightblue" style="padding-right:10px;">
*From:http://pirate.planetarion.com/showthread.php?t=181205
*By: Kal
Over a course of several meetings we in Pa Team have produced a proposal for round 13 galaxies. So here it is, discuss it criticise it, find problems in it. Kloopy will decide when the irc based Discussion Time on this will take place later today.

Signups open with 20 gals with a mentor in each
Signups are allocated to one of those mentor gals until tick 36

Once upgraded people can make buddy packs with upto 3 people on preferences screen - this works by adding a code to your planet which the shuffler will then use to move you and your friends together into one galaxy with other packs and randoms.

In tick 36, the shuffle creates as many gals as possible with packs totalling 6 people (2 packs of 3, or 3 packs of 2)
Paid randoms are shuffled first (including packs of 1 person).

Free randoms are then distributed among those 6-person pack gals based on score - this means that the better free randoms are put into gals first and spread evenly across the universe with the less good ones being added in later. So all galaxies have an equal chance of getting good free players.

After the shuffle there will be lots of gals each with 6 people from packs and randoms givgin each galaxy approximatly 10 planets.
No more galaxies are ever created

When a galaxy exiles a planet they will be sent to c200+ like in this round.

Signups and exiles (returning form c200+) are distributed through these gals with no gal-size limit, placing them into a gal in the bottom 20% by planet count. So this means that the galaxies with the most players get the lowest possibly priority on new players.

Notes:

Mentor – community volunteer / pa representative who will help people out where possible - normal players are shuffled as normal, PaTeam members moved to 1:1 etc
</td></tr>
</table>

Ships
Round 13:Ship Stats
---

More to come

Name Selection
The name was chosen by public vote from a shortlist compiled by PAteam and support, mods and #planetarion ops staff from the names submitted by users.

<table>
Despite there not being much information about Round 13 yet released, it is going to happen! As such we need a name, and therefore we will be running the customary name competition.

Here's how it works<br>
If you can think of a good name for Round 13 then all you need to do is e-mail it to a2@planetarion.com with the subject line "R13 name comp". Don't forget to include your nickname so we know who's submitted it.<br>
You can submit as many names as you want to, but the deadline is 23:59 GMT on Sunday 16th January.

The winner will not only get to see their name being used throughout the round, but will also recieve a free credit for the round. In the event of the winning name being submitted more than once, the first person to submit it will recieve the credit.

To inspire you here are the names of the previous rounds of Planetarion:

Round 1 - The Beginning<br>
Round 2 - The Struggle for Power<br>
Round 3 - The New Dawn<br>
Round 4 - The Tides of War<br>
Round 5 - The Price of Freedom<br>
Round 6 - First Encounters<br>
Round 7 - Critical Diplomacy<br>
Round 8 - Final Legacy<br>
Round 9 - Redemption<br>
Congratulations to Vargon for creating the name which was selected from the shortlist by the public vote. When asked what his inspiration was he said:<br>
Yes, The Illusion of Truth is an ironic title.<br>
Its my take on politics, and to some degree how similiar it is to R5 thru R8 politics. I was on the darkside then and learned how to hide in the early part of a round. For me, I see these 'new' names joining alliances and I can't help but think, Who are they really?<br>
So, the truth is out there. Can we determine the truth? Or will certain alliances "pull the wool" over our eyes again, and run away with it?<br>
Let us all endeavor to break through the illusions, and find the truth. For the betterment of our own alliances and a more balanced round.

For his efforts Vargon wins a free credit for Round 13. Once again thankyou to everyone who submitted a name and who voted.

A2,
Appocomaster,
Aryn,
Ashknight,
Azrael,
Biffy (Jolt),
Blixxard,
Fudge (Creator),
Harshak,
Ice-Lady,
Jakey,
JammyJim,
JonnyBGood,
KaneEd,
Karmulian,
Kal,
Keef (Jolt),
Kloopy,
Konsul,
Legolas,
Lunar Lamp,
Mist,
Mit,
Mong,
MrBrick,
Mushroom,
NB3,
Oreo (Creator),
Phil^,
Pishmishy (Jolt),
Prince,
Spinner (Creator),
TheRealMig,
Wakey,
Vish (Creator),
Xontas,
Zeus (Creator),
Zokum,

Round 4 saw the peak of Planetarions life. At it's biggest, the Universe contained around 200,000 planets. However, it is widely accepted that many players cheated by controlling multiple planets. The generally accepted user count is somewhere in the region of 50,000-150,000 unique players.

Round 4 was first round to introduce short travel time in parallel but without short travel times in cluster. This led to great shift towards parallel alliances at start of the round. It seemed like there was 25 parallel independant universes at the start, most roiding raids and defence calls was inpara. Alliances dominating in para led to lots of good players swapping and joining different alliances. That's what made some alliances strong (for example Elysium) and some weak.

The game stats and mechanics for round 4 are generally considered to be the worst bar round 5. Ships had amazing amounts of armour, and EMP as primary defence coupled with odd targeting on pod-flak ships ensured that almost no damage was done to any fleets. In addition the roid cap formula and salvage formula were both found to be abusable mid-round and had to be modified. The roid cap formula allowed for tiny red defense fleets to lower cap ridiculously, making capture from dedicated players nigh impossible, especially since it was still possible to send hostile ships in-galaxy. The salvage formula that gave rewards for killing attacking ships meant that people were registering multi accounts and suiciding their fleets on their primary planet as donations.

In the end round 4 was hailed as one of the most interesting, but for the alliance politics that shaped it rather than the mechanics. Many new alliances, such as NoS, Xanadu and Wolfpack, coupled with Fury and Legion being placed in opposing blocks meant that the round was wide open, and remained so until the very end. During the early phase of the round Fury and Wolfpack led the round, seemingly pulling away from NoS, Legion and Xanadu. Things looked particularly bleak when NoS left the alliance with Legion and Xanadu, NAPing Fury in the process. Legion and Xanadu replaced NoS with the increasingly friendly Elysium, forming VeX.

The first signs of major resistance came with a herculean set of waves that threatened to disthrone the Fury flagship galaxy, Thieves & Pirates. Due to salvage and in-galaxy farms sending red defense whenever they weren't covered, they survived, but not unscathed. Later NoS would rejoin Legion, Xanadu and Elysium when the Fury fortress parallel, 11, was launched massively on.

Xanadu and NoS eventually came out ranked highest, but NoS had suffered harsh losses during the final weeks. NoS politics were also what most heavily marked the round. NoS remained NAPed with Xanadu and on good terms throughout the round, including while NAPed with Fury. NoS also allied Wolfpack for a short period when Fury seemed to be crumbling in the absence of Synthetic_Sid. Round 4 was also heavily marked by LDK, crusades of bot accusations against them and the awesome combined military machine of Xanadu.

3 blocks featured at the start of this round: WEET, NAHR and VVOMM
Unusually, instead of being one, the other or none, short traveltime was enabled both in parallel and in cluster.
Private Galaxies were also enabled.

I will tell only about start of the round.

View from member of VVOMM galaxy:
At start i want to say few words about Eclipse, before round started i knew they have outstanding power and I forecast they win the round. As they got a lot of members from alliances that had fallen apart in Round 8 like Adelante, Fury, FAng, Titans, ie lots of best players from other alliances.
Now about main thingie at start.. ppls saing that it was VVOMM (5 alliances) at war with WEETNAHR (9 alliances - 4 in WEET among them Eclipse and 5 in NAHR - A is Auld - itself 2 alliances), but actually it wasn't that way, it was way simpler VVOMM against the rest of the Universe. Let's see at start there no wars until tick 72, parallel alliances being formed, every galaxy in para geting accepted, as WEETNAHR have way more members, they control para, geting intelligence, figuring out VVOMM galaxies coords(very easy, as it's mainly only VVOMM and WEETNAHR galaxies). Soon enought after protection over, they start kicking VVOMM galaxies from para alliance (starting from weakest ones) and all para start bashing them(all not VVOMM, i.e. Universe) as they only targets allowed to be attacked in para, and we all know all attacks at first in para. We tried to defend as we could, but odds wasn't on ours side, one thing fight again 9 alliances, another - with rest of Universe, unable to get roids, as they get defence in para, others (not VVOMM/WEETNAHR) wasn't mind kicking others VVOMM (even top para galaxies) from para alliances, i think they just was gutless, really i can't blame them, poor puppets. :P
Well, the rest is very simple standing against galaxy is impossible. What happened after in round? - I have no idea.
Ramses (me) was a mainly a planetarion Xanadian. Although he has been in some other alliances, like Elysium, Wolfpack and even Fury for sometime (afther Xanadu disbanded), it was in Xanadu that he played for most of his time in Planetarion, and where he finished as HC of that same alliance. Ramses was also founder and comander of the FNP group, alongside with WhiteSnake and Horatius.
Round 8

I was Xandathrii last round. My fleet was based on fighters and corvettes only. I had only few Broadswords - never got to use them though.

The biggest advantage of Xandathrii is ETA 7 attack fleet. Also your alliance/friends appreciate low ETA defense the Xandathrii can provide.

Another interesting feature is cloaked fleets, which make it easy to fake attacks and defenses.

Xandathrii attack fleets were feared to defend against because it always meant heavy casualties. (on both sides, but still)

Xandathrii planets were not popular targets before military scans were available, because no-one liked to attack without knowing what ships the target had. This gives Xandathrii time to focus on attacking and growing in the beginning.

The tech tree is completed fast to point when you can have Vultures. No need to research for other ships. You are all ready for battle shortly after protection, whereas other races are still going for FR and bigger ships.

All this allows Xandathrii to grow fast in the beginning. If you can outgrow others in the begining, you will be high in the food chain later on.

I was part of a battlegroup which only had other Xandathrii players. When we hit a galaxy the defense was always light and poorly organized. Thanks to low ETA and the fact military scans couldn't reveal what exactly was being send to each target.

Round 9

The PA crew didn't realize the potential of Xandathrii in round 8. They had to make the race weaker.

* Popular ships costs went up about 15%. Pulsars got 26% more expensive.
* Arrowheads lost 11% of their firepower.
* Sentinels lost 20% armor.
* Vultures lost 9% armor.
* Research/Construction times are longer.

Except the battles to be even more costly. I used to rely on target running their fleets, which they did often.

Does all this make Xandathrii worse race than others? Not in my opinion. The races are just more balanced now. Your success doesn't depend on what race you choose. Only skill, activity and politics decide.

Xandathrii is still playable. It is essential to be very active in the beginning and grow faster than others. If you cannot make it, you are better off with some other race - like Terrans.

Being Xan is a playstyle, like all other races. As a XAN you can't be arsed bout a few losses now and then and your most important strategy is major bluffing with a fleet doin huge dmg.

I'll setlle once again for ints/corvettes only with some broadswords to handle the rest of the ships. Only dissadvantage I heared about is that they made XAn abit more expensive.

<pre> Originally posted by MiX </pre>
Big advantage of Xan is that you can attack ppl with only Vultures and there still is a huge chance that they'll run (you need 1 real fleet ofc) because of low ETA they are not able to get enuf deffence against the "real fleet" and they'll run rather then taking the risk that you send a fake fleet.

Big disadvantage is that lateron in the game all ships of other races are superior to Xan ships so you really need to be alot bigger then your target if you don't want to lose bigtime. This makes alot of targets unavailable for Xan players especially Terran players with loads of Pegasus.
well r9 cutters rock even more vs xans :) my def fleet for r9 will probably be similar with a 1:1:.5 corsair:cutlass:brig(aka sabre) in resource cost. corsair are awesome and you have your cutters for a metal sink :)

my fleet last round was 3:1 cutter:marauder with most of the time only cutters and pods + de out for attacking. 2:1:1 clips:rogues:buccs plus some dems and pegs i stole. i had a few theives too but with my fi out nearly every night for def i didnt get to use my 200 or so vultures much.

theres no sense planning on rely on any stolen ships since zik have such great ones in the first place :)
I will be of course play zik as usual from R6 when this race was intoduced I play zik, cheanging ziks stats was drop down zik a little thay incrise steeling but thay drop down armor of this steeling ships a lot (thief, marauder, rogue) pilagers and pirate are crap and not worth even reashrch-construction.
As you see in cherious post I was not build much steeling ships, cutters and clippers was most dominant ships in my fleet+ some FI for alliance defence and thay didnt cheange stats for classic ships probably my fleet will be the same only think about building more thievs then usual.

Think Thief has now a realy good ship as thay incrise firepower near double.I am sure my combo will be CO only fleet in attack (thiev+vulture+arrowhead+other CO depend of target) until I get DE fleet clippers+rogue+unipods.

About ships from other race I only need some unipods and vulture:))
Although i agree with you on the point of Terrans being much underrated, I have a few points to pick at the 'strategy' you have mentioned.

Early on you can go for mass-Harpies and pods for simple roids against in-cluster/parallel targets. Previously Terrans have been weak roiding without FR/DE, meaning they loose some ground early on. Now that C/P have been brought back that disadvantage is virtually lifted, and you can rack up a nice roid total while teching up to FR.

As far as FR go, [b]never[/b] touch Drakes. Their only use is as EMP flak, and even this isnt enough to make them more effective than the firepower of Chims/Centaurs (the Drakes weapons are much less powerful than the Chimera, for a higher price). For those with crystal to sink, Centaurs are rather useful anti-xan tools, shooting CO pods as T1 and travelling at CO ETAs (again, cluster and parallel bonus). Chimeras T3 All will really help later in the game, and they are well worth considering as a metal sink and as a solid support ship for your own attacks, and possibly in low-eta def (ETA8 Chims Vs CR pods = death :).

Pegasi and Demeters will of course form the core of your roiding after the 2nd week of the round or so. Make sure you grab alot of C roids to support them, but this shouldn't be a problem as your main targets will be Cathaar and Xand. Chimeras and Harpies will help clear your path early on, before Wyverns kick in around week 4 and shoot down any annoying Zik DE or Terran core fleets, allowing you to effectively target those races too. Syrens are worth considering as a deterrant to attackers and for c/p/gal defense, as they shoot down the 3 most common pod classes quite well and dont get targeted too much in return. Dragons/Wyvern fleets may also help keep Cathaar off your back, as they lack any decent anti-BS capabilities.

Overall, Terrans are much overlooked and highly underestimated. If you know what you're doing with them, you'll be doing well in round 9.

...

Pegasi aren't as superior over Centaur as everyone think. For a start, Pegasi have to shoot FI before CO, and alot of anti-DE def will be CO based (Roach, Gryphon). Centaurs target CO first, and arent targeted by many anti-DE ships in return. On larger targets you could combine your FR and DE fleets to good effect.

Not to mention people often overlook the ETA of the Centaur (same as CO class). This is very useful for incluser/para/gal anti-Xand def as they target the Arrows and Vultures first and dont receive many hits back in return due to being FR class.

<pre>Originally posted by Tatu</pre>
Roiding Terrans with FI/CO is not about whether you can get some pods through to the roids. Nor it's about whether you can eliminate all Pegasi before they shoot. You can't as Chimeras stand in Pulsars' way.

It's all about how much damage you are willing to sustain for the goods - ever so often the price tag on Terran roids is sky high.

Terran

To start with the most modest and most reliable race during all the rounds, i choosed to name Terran.
This race always was easy to handle, had mainstream ships but as many other ppl named, its major flaw was the stop in development since r6. While other races were tweaked, changed, trimmed and upgraded the Terranship was kept in the same shape, this lead over the time from an advanced race slowly towards a decaying star. The most notable ships in a Terran fleet are Pegasus,Demeters,Wyverns,Dragoons,Harpies,Phoenix, Chimeras and maybe Gryphons. Hardly any other ship is worth to invest ressources into it.

Before i go totally into detail of specific ships i want to light up the situation background of this round abit more. There will be lots of Ziks&Xans and the Para/Cluster setting will reduce attacktimes even more while overburn defence is gone. This means in the longrun especially fast attacks get more and more dangerous, something terrans can not well reply to. The Harpy is and always was a modest fighter good armor combined with good firepower just not outstanding, especially WITH vrshak fighters on the same side it was able to reduce the devastating effects of hostile fire.

cathaar

Known for its efficience in blocking things, hated for its lack of killing the enemy or "winning the war". My personal view on this was always very splitted, effective while not beeing able to make it on their own. Something the Cathaar always had as a major flaw.

Loved from many officers for its ability to turn the tide in big battles or to defend a single incoming with less ships. You see from all of this remarks its more a choice of personal taste. For eclipse i would recommend to have a good portion emp but the number should not be over 15-20% of our total memberbase as Emp doesnt win a war. Now i go to a brief overview of ships:

xan

Prolly the most noteable race of last round. It was/is highly advantage by the (in r8 changed) milscans and its heavy firepower. Tho it went through some serious changes and downgrading this round which i will illuminate now abit more.

From what we all know a Xan only needs FI/CO, his frigs or destroyers and any capital ships normally dont appear in the fleets and if only to serve a single purpouse i.e. to fight of BS attacks. As seen in the past Xan is very powerfull, especially the fast eta raiding fleets and its huge fighterswarms are welcomed in attacks and defences by alliances. Combined with the huge advantage of faking attacks in milscans and the always present fear of not knowing what the enemy sended in a xan fleet gives them a huge edge

zik

The race of the many faces you may call it. Before you decide to go into this race you must throw all feelings of order overboard. Your fleet will be a chaos and you will end up half the time recalcing and reevaluating your own fleet to the universal situation. This might sound like a bad thing but it is their biggest advantage. No other race is able to adopt a universal weakspot as quickly as Zirkonians. If you see the universe is having a hard time to defend vs DE attacks, be sure Ziks wont take long to cap a few De-Pods and to join the race. This gives you after the gamestart endless chances to adjust your own fleet to your needs.
Seeing the efficiency ranking for anti de by bas inspired me to say something about an undervalued cathaar ship: the defender.

In my opinion defenders is a much ignored but very valuable ship. Yes they suck in killing pegs, they may come in handy when you want to cover bs incoming, though i don't think there'll be many BS attacking.

The main use i put my 1,7k defenders [ :) !] to is emp flak. It takes about 700 BW to stun 1k defenders (about 2.5 bw res to stunn 1 def res) deriving them from freezing my own bw and pods.

Whenever i attack cathaar or i expect in gal or cluster def with bw i set up a fleet that include defenders. Some people might argue well this is what the scarab is for. But If your target has spids (and most of the cathars have some spids) or you can expect that there will be spid defence, you scarabs won't shoot being stunned very efficiently by the high initiative spiders.

Also when you expect sentinel defence and you can not expect freezing them all (i mostly go for the 15% cap) they come in handy: the remaing sentinel unstunned by your beetles will target your defenders. And sentinel suck against them (res to kill ratio is like 7 iirc).

Well and whenever there's a peg - wyvern combo heading to some Ely planet, BCs will prolly be happy about some defenders: they are real good at killing BS and prolly most of the terrans won't accept high losses for their precious BS.

I agree they are pretty much useless against pegs themselves, but there for i have another 1,7k roaches. Roaches can't really be used for emp flak though if you go for the 15% cap. They are way stunned to easily.

In Planetarion most numbers are rounded down. This is probably most important when examining the bonuses granted by engineering. It is important to be aware of the relevant formulae when considering the consequences of of rounding down. For example, in research the actual research time is rounded down rather than the bonus granted by race and engineering. Generally it's safe to assume that rounding is done in the last possible instance before the result is given to the player.

Salvage was introduced in Round 4 to lessen the impact of losing one's fleet (when defending). Salvage is an amount of resources that defenders share based on the value of ships lost in combat. Defenders get an amount of salvage relative to the fleet-value they have present in the combat. More value present equates a larger portion of salvage gained. For Round 13 salvage is 15% of the attacking ships original resource cost lost and 20% of the defending ships.

Description
The Planetarion Database Dumps are files with ingame information from Planetarion.
They show planet, galaxy and alliance information, such as score, size and value. They are generated at the end of the tick which is usually around xx:07, but it has been recommended that any sites wishing to use them retrieve them no earlier than xx:15 in order to allow for ticks which take longer than normal.

These dump file(s) are usually used in Arbiter's and the various tool kits.

The dumpfiles are available at:

http://jpaweb01.planetarion.com/botfiles/planet_listing.txt

http://jpaweb01.planetarion.com/botfiles/galaxy_listing.txt

http://jpaweb01.planetarion.com/botfiles/alliance_listing.txt

Structure
Since 8th June 2004 the structures of the database dumps have been:

Planets<br>
<tt>X, Y, Z, Planet name, Ruler name, Race, Size, Score, Value</tt>

Galaxies<br>
<tt>X, Y, Galaxy Name, Size, Score, Value</tt>

Alliances<br>
<tt>Rank, Alliance name, Size, Members, Score</tt>

Each file starts with information about what the file contains. eg:

<tt>Content: Planetarion Alliance Listing (sorted by rank)<br>
Author: Christian Lassem <spinner@planetarion.com><br>
Version: 1.01<br>
Tick: 1406<br>
Separator: '	'<br>
Format: 'rank	"alliance name"	size	members	score'</tt>

Tools
Many alliances write their own tools using these dumpfiles, and sites such as sandmans and pilkara also utilize them.

Here are some basic php code examples on how to use em:

<?

mysql_connect( "host", "user", "pass" );
mysql_select_db( "database" );

$planetList = file_get_contents( "http://jpaweb01.planetarion.com/botfiles/planet_listing.txt" );

preg_match_all( "/(\d+)\t(\d+)\t(\d+)\t\"(.+)\"\t\"(.+)\"\t(.+)\t(\d+)\t(\d+)/i",
$planetList, $planetArray, PREG_SET_ORDER );

mysql_query( "TRUNCATE TABLE planets" );

foreach ( $planetArray as $planet )
{
mysql_query( "INSERT INTO planets VALUES ( $planet[1], $planet[2],
$planet[3], '$planet [4]', '$planets[5]', '$planet[6]', $planet[7], $planet[8] )" );
}

?>

And here is the MySQL table structure to go with it:

Value = (Fleet-Cost / 100) + (Resources / 150) + (Constructions * 1500) + (Roids * 200)

Where Fleet-cost is the combined resources necessary to purchase all of the ships a planet owns.

Value may also refer to only one of these. For example:

Planet X has lots of value in resources.

Or referring to value in a fleet sent to attack or defend:

Planet Y sent more value than Planet Z.
During the period it is closed the account owner has no access to the planet and no fleets can be launched towards it. Upon closing all fleets heading to or from the planet are automatically returned to their base. Planet closures have caused controversy when a high profile planet is caught cheating or when the timing of a closure is percieved to have damaged or benefitted one of the sides in a war due to fleets being recalled possibly into the midst of a battle which the planet owner thought they had saved their ships from.
Reasons can range from multiple members of a family wanting the play the game, to accessing the game from a shared connection at school or work. They can also be applied for for short periods of time such as covering weekends where groups of players get together socially but may want to keep an eye on their planets.

An exception does not guarantee invulnerability to accusations of account sharing or multiing, but it is generally agreed that if factors such as location are declared before they become a problem that they are more likely to be genuine.
Planets linked by an exception are also forbidden from interacting with each other which forces them to be played as independent planets.

Multihunters use admin tools and tip-offs submitted by the community to find and close planets that are breaking the game rules. For the most part these are accusations of account sharing, where more than one person operates an account, or multi-ing where a person has access to more than one account. Both are banned.

Evidence
Evidence used ranges from usernames, passwords and e-mail addresses being similar or the same to login correlations where accounts are logged into at similar times from the same place, or are logged into from wildly different locations frequently (eg. Germany and Australia). When a planet is found to be cheating it is closed and an e-mail is sent automatically to the account owner. They then have 7 days to appeal the decision and it is rare for a player to admit that they cheated. More commonly a variety of excuses are presented which range from the slightly plausible to the wildly impossible. In the case of account sharing it has been known for the planet to accidentally prove the point when more than one person claims to be the account owner. After 7 days if the multihunter team have not been convinced by the reasons presented the planet is automatically deleted. On some occasions the reasons given are satisfactory and the planet is reopened.

Punishments
Multihunters can apply a range of punishments to planets found cheating depending on the scale. Mostly the planet is closed which is followed, after appeal, by the planet being deleted. Other punishments such as a percentage decrease in roids, fleet, xp etc can be applied at the multihunter's discretion, but they are usually used for offences such as abusive language being used excessivley in PA Mails or on the Galaxy Forums.

Exceptions
Families playing, or groups playing at schools, universities and workplaces can apply for an exception to tell the multihunter team in advance that there is more than one account at a location.
